The full-back has so far failed to make a senior appearance for his country, despite playing at both U19 and U21 level.

However, his recent form, along with the ongoing absence of Seamus Coleman, has opened the door for a potential first cap in his nation's World Cup play-off meeting with Denmark.

Doherty is joined by Aston Villa trio Glenn Whelan, Conor Hourihane and Scott Hogan, whilst West Brom winger James McClean also makes the provisional squad for the two-legged clash with the Danes.

Ireland travel to their opponents on Saturday November 11th before their home tie three days later on the 14th. If they secure an aggregate victory, they'll qualify for the tournament in Russia next summer.
