Matt Doherty: Wolves can handle Championship pressure

Matt Doherty is confident Wolves can cope with the favourites tag this season.

Wolves resume their Championship campaign at home to Millwall, aiming to build on an encouraging first month of the campaign under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

A haul of 10 points from the opening five league fixtures, following a summer of change at Molineux, quickly saw them installed as title favourites with some bookmakers.

And though Wolves made a similarly strong start last season, only to fall away, wideman Doherty believes they are now better equipped to deal with rapidly rising expectations.

“We are probably favourites in a lot of games. What let us down last season was those games where we were expected to win and didn’t,” he said.

“We need to be better in those games but I think the team and the shape is better equipped to do that this season.”

Saturday’s game against Millwall is quickly followed by Tuesday’s visit of Bristol City, while seven games in total are pencilled in for the next three weeks.

Having reeled off three straight Championship wins to open the season, Wolves have taken just one point from the last two league fixtures.

Doherty believes the next two games offer a platform to kick on into another busy month.

He added: “We are still in a strong position now and ready to push on.

“We come back now with another two quick games, and this is what it is like in the Championship.

“We are used to it now and know what to expect and two games in four days is never easy.

“But we are going into a run of fixtures now where we want to try and pick up as many points as possible.

“One point out of the last six isn’t what would have wanted but with the three wins to kick off it is certainly a start we would have taken at the beginning of the season.”
