Harry Burgoyne open to Wolves loan
Harry Burgoyne has set his sights on becoming Wolves’ first-choice goalkeeper – but would be open to another loan spell if needed to get game time.
The 20-year-old academy product broke through into the first team last season, making seven appearances, writes Rob Cox.
But competition for the number one spot at Molineux is set to be fierce following the arrival of John Ruddy and Will Norris over the summer.
Speaking to the Express & Star, Burgoyne said he was ready to battle for his place.
He said: “I am going to fight as hard as I can to get the number one shirt, that is first and foremost.
“That is the whole reason I am there because I want to be number one.
“If that is not to be then I will try and get as many games as I can.
“Whether that is out on loan come January is up to the manager, if he would allow me to do that or not. We will cross that bridge when we come to it.
“It is all about experience and I want to play as much as possible.”
Burgoyne, from Ludlow, made his debut in the 4-4 draw against Fulham in December and was then thrust into the national spotlight when playing in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Liverpool at Anfield which Carl Ikeme and Andy Lonergan missed through suspension and injury.
Burgoyne kept his first Wolves clean sheet on the final day of the season in a 1-0 win over Preston at Molineux. He was also Wolves’ hero in their Checkatrade Trophy penalty shoot-out win over Sunderland, saving two spot-kicks, and later had a brief loan spell with League Two side Barnet.
His performances impressed those at a national level and in May he was called up to train with the England Under-21 squad.
Burgoyne also spoke about the club’s ambitions for the coming season stating that promotion was the goal they are working towards.
He said: “We have all go high hopes (of promotion). We all want to go and get into the Premier League. It is what every club in the whole country wants and that is our aim. It is what we are going for.”
