Jon Dadi Bodvarsson leaves Wolves for rivals Reading

The Icelandic striker has penned a three-year deal with Jaap Stam's Royals and immediately flown out to their pre-season training camp in Holland.

As revealed in the Express & Star yesterday, Reading edged out Ipswich for Bodvarsson's signature with the Tractor Boys only offering a loan move.

Royals manager Jaap Stam said, “Jon is the type of player who can play in our system and he is able to play in a number up different positions within that system too - up front as a central striker, as one of a two or as a winger.

“He’s a strong runner, he’s tall but he’s very comfortable on the ball, he’s got some pace…so he’s definitely a player who will be a useful addition to our squad.”

Chief executive Ron Gourlay added: “I am delighted to bring Jon to Reading Football Club on a contract that keeps him here until 2020.

"He is a forward who, despite only recently turning 25, has already earned in excess of 200 appearances whilst experiencing regular first team football across a range of different European domestic leagues – including the Championship.

"He also arrives at Reading with proven international pedigree and we now look forward to him making an impact at the Madejski."

Bodvarsson joined Wolves last summer and started well, scoring on his debut at Rotherham and then again at Blues a few weeks later.

But thereafter he badly struggled for goals, not scoring until April for a final total of three goals in 42 appearances, with 20 of those coming from the bench.

He remained a popular figure with supporters for his whole-hearted performances leading the line on his own up front.

Bodvarsson was given an extended summer break after playing two years of almost continuous football and having repeatedly stated last season he needed to refresh his batteries.

However, it seems 25-year-old Bodvarsson’s face doesn’t fit under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Wolves have offloaded three players today to take their summer clearout to 11.

Dominic Iorfa and Ethan Ebanks-Landell have both gone out on loan, to Ipswich Town and MK Dons respectively.

Mike Williamson, Silvio and James Henry were released, Jed Wallace and George Saville joined Millwall, Paul Gladon went back to former club Heracles on loan and permanent deals were pursued for Richard Stearman or Andreas Weimann.
