The £13million winger is believed to have undergone surgery on the ankle problem that has dogged him April and led him to miss the end of last season.

Costa was training on his own at Compton Park last week to try and get back up to fitness, but the issue hasn’t gone away and Wolves’ medical team have been forced to opt for a last resort of surgery.

In an official club statement, Wolves confirmed the situation:

"The 23-year-old winger, who has been suffering with the troublesome injury since towards the end of last season, underwent the surgery yesterday and is now back home and ready to start the process of rehabilitation.

"The expected absence from now is set to be between six and ten weeks but, with the success of the operation, it is anticipated that Helder will be available towards the lower end of that timescale.

"As with all injuries, all potential interventions are tried prior to surgery, which is always the last resort given the possible complications.

"Wolves are now confident that Helder will make a complete recovery and be available for selection during the early stages of the 2017/18 season."

The 23-year-old would miss the first six league games of the season with a two-month absence. Ivan Cavaleiro is already suspended for the first two via suspension, while Jordan Graham hasn’t travelled to Austria.

Costa was Wolves' player of the year in 2016/17 and became the club's record signing when making his loan move from Benfica a permanent one in January.

There were fears he might leave Molineux this summer but chairman Jeff Shi went on record last month to state Costa wouldn't be sold.

As well as Costa and Graham, it's understood Prince Oniangue, Lee Evans, Dominic Iorfa and Ethan Ebanks-Landell didn’t travel with the squad that flew to Austria on Monday morning.

New signing Phil Ofosu-Ayeh is still carrying an injury he had when signed last month and has stayed at Compton Park, while Jon Dadi Bodvarsson also isn’t with the squad. It’s believed he’s been given an extended summer break.
