New left back a priority for Wolves

Signing a left-back will be a priority for Wolves this summer, Paul Lambert has revealed.

The Wolves boss is lining up a number of targets for what he's termed an 'absolutely huge' summer in the transfer market.

And Lambert has stated that bringing in a left-back will be high on his to-do list.

Matt Doherty has featured there for most of the campaign but Lambert still sees the Irishman as a right-back. Doherty won player of the season for his performances on the left flank in 2015/16 but hasn't been as effective this term and recently spent time out the team before picking up a hamstring injury.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has spent the season on loan from Manchester United but made just seven appearances - and none under Lambert. Portuguese international Silvio played there against Huddersfield last week and earned praise from his boss, but is out of contract this summer.

Lambert said: "You don't need to be Einstein to be at this club and say we need a left back.

"This club needs a few to come in, there's no two ways about it."

George Saville filled in at left back during Saturday's chastening 3-1 defeat at Derby County.

Lambert praised the 23-year-old endeavour but admitted he was very much filling in for Doherty's current injury absence.

"To be fair to George he's not a left back," Lambert added.

"Doc's not even a left back...we don't really have a left back.

"The great thing about Saville is he never shied away from it. He never capitulated, he stuck at it - these are the type of characters you need when things don't go your way, you put your shoulder to the wheel."

Wolves last signed a first-team left back in 2013 when Scott Golbourne joined from Barnsley.

Saville's current deal expires at the end of the season. Wolves have an option to extend it by a year and it's expected they'll make an announcement next week on the future of their out-of-contract players.

Silvio and French youngster Sylvain Deslandes, who hasn't once featured for League One side Bury during an unsuccessful loan spell, are in the same position as Saville with regards to their contracts.

Fellow out-of-contract duo Jack Price and Bolton loanee James Henry also have one-year options should Wolves take them up.

Mike Williamson is the final first-team player out of contract but there is no automatic option for the 33-year-old.
