Joe Mason desperate to show his worth to Wolves

On the face of it, Wolves have little to play for tonight.

Indeed, their primary aim should be to prevent their fans from falling asleep, after the insipid snorefest they produced on Saturday.

Paul Lambert has pledged to make changes in a bid to freshen things up.

And that could be good news for Joe Mason, who was a surprise name in the squad against Blackburn after almost three months out injured.

And try telling Mason there's nothing to play for tonight. He's desperate to prove himself, both to Lambert and the supporters.

The same could be said for the likes of Dominic Iorfa, Morgan Gibbs-White or even Jordan Graham if he makes his long-awaited injury comebacks.

Mason believes that Lambert is really starting to impose his philosophy and mentality on the squad,

"We've got back to basics, nothing stupid," he said of Wolves' recent improvements. "It's been a tough year with all the changes but now the manager's got us doing what he wants us to do.

"Players are starting to adjust to how he wants us to play.

"As soon as I knew we were signing Ben Marshall I was over the moon because I've played against him a few times and I know what he's all about, his deliveries are spot on and I'm looking forward to playing with him.

"And Jordan when he comes back. They're all good players and can set me up for a few goals."

For Mason personally, though, it's not been a great season. It started promisingly with three goals in the opening weeks, but injuries have curtailed his progress.

"It's not one I'll look back on," he said. "Even when I was fit, under (Walter) Zenga I wasn't playing every game and then the injuries started to creep in. It's not one I'll look back on too fondly.

"I'm in over the summer. I need to make sure I'm back strong for pre-season.

"The team are working on a programme for me for the summer. I've got to make sure I hit the ground running."

Tonight's opponents have enjoyed their best league season for decades but it'll mean little if they don't win promotion.

With three games left, the Terriers can secure a top-six spot with victory tonight.

And Mason, who played in the reverse fixture when Wolves lost 1-0 back in August, knows Wolves face a stern test in tonight's Molineux clash.

"Huddersfield need the points," he said. "They've not had the best of runs lately, they'll be wanting to bounce back from Saturday.

"They're a good team and they play good football. They've got a good manager, they like to get it down and play and they're a tough team to play against.

"They like to press, work hard and they do all the horrible things really well. They'll be wanting the three points so it'll be a tough game.

"It'll be a tough test and with the Fulham result they'll be looking to rectify that. They're quick on the counter and strong at the back to be fair.

"For us, everyone is fighting for their places for next year and trying to impress. We need to put Saturday behind us. That's the good thing about the Championship, games come thick and fast. We need to put that one right. It's not a true reflection of the team."
