Impressive Lee Evans full of Wolves confidence

The much-needed win at Brentford was a pressure game for everyone concerned – the team as a whole, the head coach and the individual players.

Not least Lee Evans who, after a month out in the cold, was thrown into a crucial game in central midfield – and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Evans was arguably the best midfielder on the pitch as Wolves produced a stunning comeback to win 2-1 and move clear of the relegation zone.

That was a far cry, both for Evans and the team, from a month earlier when Paul Lambert's men lost 1-0 at home to Wigan and Evans was hauled off after an hour.

Did Evans feel the pressure, having been given another chance? "Massive pressure," he said. "I knew I was way below par against Wigan.

"If you would have told me that I wouldn't play for another month after that then I wouldn't have expected it.

"I knew how big an opportunity it was and I had to try to take it because my last game was so far away.

"I expected to get tired towards the end but it was just fantastic."

The Brentford victory made it six crucial points from two matches.

After the sluggish 1-0 win over Rotherham – which saw one of the worst performances of the season – Wolves were as good as they've been in the league under Lambert against Brentford.

Evans said of the two matches: "I think Rotherham was all about the three points.

"We didn't really care how we played, we just needed to beat Rotherham and get the points. We knew Rotherham were going to come to Molineux and sit deep. It was win or bust I think.

"After that win, even though we didn't play well, it still gave us a bit of confidence because we got the three points.

"At Brentford we just stuck to our game plan, we really pressed them high and stopped their main players from getting on the ball and dictating the play.

"I really think we did that, especially Dave Edwards who pressured Ryan Woods well all night and he didn't really have a kick.

"I think the front three really set us off, set the tone, and then we backed them up in behind."

After a good week Wolves know they can't rest on their laurels. After all, defeat tomorrow could see them pulled to within a point of the drop zone again, ahead of the international break.

Evans said of the clash: "It's going to be a hard game on Saturday.

"They're flying at the moment.

"But if we can stick to our game plan, similar to at Brentford, try and press players and stop them from playing football then I think we could have a bit of joy.

"We're going to go there again as underdogs but Tuesday's three points have given us massive confidence so hopefully we can go and get that result.

"I think people expected Brentford to put a couple past us, especially when you consider the last couple of times that we've been there and not picked up great results.

"We knew if we could get three points then we could open up the gap. There's a little bit of a cushion now but we still need to get a few more wins yet."
