Danny Batth says Wolves need to show more character
Skipper Danny Batth says Wolves haven’t shown enough character this season – but has backed the team to kick on from their wonderful week.
Seven points from three matches has transformed the Molineux mood, with Paul Lambert’s team now up to 18th and looking to lessen their relegation chances as soon as possible.
Tuesday’s memorable last-gasp win at Brentford was their second victory in successive, after previously going seven without a win.
And captain Batth wants to see more of the character Lambert’s team showed.
“The boys showed great character and we need to see more of that this season – we’ve not seen enough of it,” he said.”
“There’s obviously jubilation at the end but we’re not getting carried away. It’s just a stepping stone to where we want to end up. We need to focus on Saturday’s trip to Craven Cottage.”
After their topsy turvy results this season the 26-year-old defender knows to be wary that Wolves can easily be dragged down the table again.
“For every high in the Championship there’s a low around the corner,” he added.
“(But) we go to Fulham full of confidence.
“Our front three or four looked really potent. If we can get more of that and stay solid at the back we can keep picking up points.
“Brentford was our game in hand so three points is massive. We’ve got a good group of lads and trust me they’ve felt the pain these last few weeks.
“I’ve never really questioned desire in our dressing room. There’s never been a lack of desire, it’s literally just been a finishing touch.
“There are players in the team, like myself, that can add more goals. It’s not a matter of the strikers, we look all over for goals. We defend together and attack together.
“I don’t look behind or in front, I just focus on the present. We’ll make sure we’re on top of Fulham from the off.”
Wolves have regularly been playing well but not winning of late. It looked to be the same story at Griffin Park before their stunning late turnaround.
“We’ve been winning the stats – I even asked the analyst if the stats were broken, because we keep winning them but not winning matches,” Batth added.
“That tells you so much it’s about putting the ball in the back of the net.”
Ivan Cavaleiro and Ben Marshall made a big impact from the bench, while Helder Costa looked back to his old self.
Batth, who has been dropped twice in recent weeks, feels the quality of the squad is certainly good enough, including in central defence where competition for places in now fierce.
“Obviously I want to be playing every game,” he added. “I’ll be doing my best when I’m playing to show the manager I deserve a place week in, week out. There’s good competition so no one is guaranteed to start.
“The manager trusts his full squad and we paid him back with a win at Brentford.
“A club of our stature deserves that kind of quality (Cavaleiro and Marshall) from the bench.
“We’ve been crying out for it.
“There’s no doubting Helder’s quality. You saw him getting targeted at Brentford, he was getting kicked from pillar to post, I lost count of the number of fouls on him. They were fouls where he can’t commit anyone. “I can only see us progressing, there’s a lot of positivity there and confidence is massive in football.”
“We’ll make sure we go to Fulham, who are in their own battle for the top six, and spoil their party.”
