Five Wolves goalscoring debutants

New Wolves signing Andreas Weimann will be hoping for a goalscoring debut if selected for today's game at Norwich City.

Published

He certainly wouldn't be the first Wolves player to net on their debut at Carrow Road – as anyone who witnessed Robbie Keane's sensational double salvo in 1997 can attest.

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers has picked out a few more memorable goalscoring Wolves debuts from over the years.

EDDIE STUART V WEST BROM, 1952

The South African would become one of the most revered defenders in Wolves' long history.

But back in 1952 it was as a striker that Stuart made his Wolves debut – and he found the back of the net against fierce rivals Albion, albeit in a 4-1 defeat.

Not the most memorable of games from a Wolves perspective.

But for Stuart it certainly was. He would make 321 more appearances in gold and black – and never scored again.

ANDY GRAY V EVERTON, 1979

Thumb up from Andy Gray after signing for Wolves

There was plenty of pressure on Andy Gray's shoulders when he became the most expensive player in British football history, joining Wolves from Villa for £1.5m.

But he made the perfect start to what would be a four-year Wolves career when he netted on his debut in a 3-2 win at Everton.

Gray scored four in his first three Wolves appearances and netted 15 in total that season, topping it off with a winner in the League Cup final against Nottingham Forest at Wembley.

DARREN ROBERTS V BLUES, 1992

Villa fan Darren Roberts scored a full debut hat-trick for Wolves against Blues

A Birmingham-born Villa fan is plucked from non-league obscurity and bags a hat-trick in his first Wolves start at St Andrew's...if Carlsberg did debuts.

"It's not happening is it?" Roberts exclaimed after his astonishing Roy of the Rovers-esque heroics in a televised 4-0 trouncing.

"I'm waiting for someone to tell me this is a dream. My league debut, a derby match, and a hat-trick against Blues...and I'm a Villa fan as well!"

STEVE FROGGATT V READING, 1994

Steve Froggatt spent four years at Wolves

Big bucks had been splashed by the late Graham Taylor that summer and one of his £1million men, Steve Froggatt, made an instant impact.

In front of a buoyant 27,012 at the newly-rebuilt Molineux, Froggatt tapped into an empty net after Darren Ferguson's shot had been saved.

It was one of several moments that encapsulated a tangible feelgood factor at Molineux in the early stages of that season.

ROBBIE KEANE V NORWICH, 1997

Applause from Don Goodman during Robbie Keane's phenomenal debut

Surely the standout on this list. Keane scored 36 goals in a single season for the youth team and was unleashed on Norwich in 1997, aged just 17.

He scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Carrow Road.

Boss Mark McGhee described Keane's debut as 'mesmerising'.

Keane's mother Anne said: "We nearly fell over the balcony when he scored his first goal.

"I doubt whether the directors' box has ever seen anything like it!"

TEMURI KETSBAIA V SHEFF WED, 2000

Temuri Ketsbaia in a rare moment when he wasn't kicking advertising hoardings

The capture of Georgian eccentric Ketsbaia for £900,000 from Newcastle was considered a coup in 2000.

And he delivered just 17 minutes into his debut, smashing home a fierce free kick in a 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Sixteen minutes and 43 seconds earlier Kevin Pressman had entered the record books for the fastest red card in English football history for handling outside the box.

DEAN STURRIDGE V WIMBLEDON, 2001

Celebrations after Dean Sturridge's debut stunner (he's in there somewhere)

Sturridge joined on loan from Leicester and scored the only goal of the game for Dave Jones' side at Selhurst Park.

He followed that up with a hat-trick on his home debut against Barnsley three days later.

Not a bad start.

BENIK AFOBE V BLACKPOOL, 2015

A game memorable for the emotional tributes paid to Sir Jack Hayward shortly after his death, aged 91.

Afobe had just signed from Arsenal for £2m and came off the bench on 57 minutes.

He sealed a 2-0 victory in stoppage time, the first of 13 goals in 21 appearances that season.

BRIGHT ENOBAKHARE V BARNET, 2015

The teenager who is now establishing himself in Paul Lambert's first team made a dream debut under Kenny Jackett last season.

Just three minutes into his first ever appearance in professional football Enobakhare opened the scoring against Barnet in a second round EFL Cup tie.

Joe Mason repeated the feat later in the campaign, scoring in the same minute of his debut against Bolton.

JON DADI BODVARSSON V ROTHERHAM, 2016

Altogether now...

Wolves were 2-0 down in Walter Zenga's first game in charge on the opening day of this season.

George Saville pulled a goal back but then Dominic Iorfa saw red for a foul on Jon Taylor.

The odds seems stacked against Wolves but Bodvarsson rifled home a 65th minute equaliser.

The Icelandic clap came out at full time. A cult hero was born.
