A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Officers have arrested a man following a collision with a statue outside the Molineux Stadium on Waterloo Road, in the early hours of this morning.

"A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving.

"He remains in police custody this afternoon."

A spokesman for Wolves said: "The club has also been in contact with West Midlands Police over the damage done to the base of the Billy Wright Statue following a traffic incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The club's staff will be assessing the damage done to the statue with a view to carrying out restoration work as soon as possible."

The 9ft bronze statue was unveiled by Billy's widow Joy in 1996 and is considered to be one of the finest football statues in the country.

It depicts the former Wolves and England captain - who earned 105 caps for his country - leading out his team. He died in 1994, aged 70.

Wolves also have a statue of multi title-winning boss Stan Cullis outside the stand which bears his name, which was erected in 2003.

And a third statue at Molineux, of former owner Sir Jack Hayward who died in 2015, will be unveiled later this year.
