Carl Ikeme close to agreeing new Wolves deal

Carl Ikeme is on the verge of securing his long-term future with the club, sporting director Kevin Thelwell has revealed.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper is out of contract next summer.

Ikeme, who came through the academy at Wolves and has established himself as the club's number one keeper in the past four seasons, has publicly stated he is keen to sign a new deal.

And Thelwell said positive discussions had taken place as recently as this week.

"We're not quite there yet but we've had really good discussions," he said.

"Things are progressing well and we'd be hopeful of securing him for the future.

"We're not there yet but discussions are ongoing."

Wolves went into the season with three senior players – Ikeme, David Edwards and skipper Danny Batth – all in the last year of their contracts.

If Nigeria international Ikeme puts pen to paper, that will leave only Mike Williamson and youngster Connor Hunte whose deals are due to expire.

Talks are unlikely any time soon with Williamson owing to his recent injury record.

A host of other players such as Silvio, Jack Price, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, George Saville, Lee Evans and James Henry can be released next summer with their contracts up, but Wolves have the option of an extra year on each player.

Thelwell added: "We've been fortunate – and this comes from Jez Moxey – in that the number one priority is to get the paper trail right and keep your eye on where people are, so we've kept control on which players are out of contract and when."
