Cardiff 2 Wolves 1 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players as Wolves slump to a poor defeat away at Cardiff City.

Published

Harry Burgoyne

Very quiet in the first half (an unconvincing punch from a long throw was his only real involvement). Much busier in the second, with mixed results. Pulled off a stunning save to deny Craig Noone but for the equaliser he got stuck behind a couple of Cardiff players. A couple of poor kicks got the home crowd on his back. A steep learning curve but he'll be much better off for the invaluable experience of facing Cardiff's aerial bombardment. 5/10

Dominic Iorfa

Well below his best yet again. Confidence must be shot. Couldn't get off the ground for Cardiff's equaliser, meaning Connolly didn't even need to jump to head the ball home from all of three yards. Needs to be taken out of the firing line. 3/10

Danny Batth

Superb in the first half - revelled in Cardiff's basic approach of lumping it into the box via either a long throw (there were a lot of those) a cross or a set piece. A couple of hairy moments after the break, although the fact the hosts were able to get the ball into the penalty area with astonishing regularity wasn't his fault, nor Stearman's. Misjudged the flight of the ball for the equaliser. 7/10

Richard Stearman

Like Batth he enjoyed clearing most things with ease in those first 45 minutes. Probably Wolves' standout player on his return to the side, but that wasn't saying much. 7/10

Matt Doherty

Fantastic strike to give Wolves that early lead - he let fly with a proper rocket that was too hot for keeper Ben Amos to handle. Two goals in two games for the Irishman. But he was outmuscled in the build-up to Cardiff's winner. Positioning left a lot to be desired at times. 5/10

David Edwards

Played far deeper than in recent weeks. In fact he was barely seen around the opposition box. Paul Lambert said his team were 'leggy' in the second half and that could certainly be said of Edwards. Probably his least effective performance of the season. 4/10

Romain Saiss

A really disappointing performance. Conceded possession too often and failed to get a grip on the game. Another who looked tired. The player who gave a midfield masterclass on his debut at Newcastle has very rarely been seen since. 4/10

George Saville

Brought into the team to freshen things up in place of Conor Coady but he struggled to make an impact. Should have put Wolves in front when the score was at 1-1. 4/10

Helder Costa

A couple of bright moments early on and looked like Wolves' most likely outlet for something special, but a terrible tackle by Lee Peltier took the wind out of his sails. Struggled on for the rest of the first half and was withdrawn at half time. 5/10

Nouha Dicko

A thankless task up front. Isolated for the most part, but didn't really bring anything to the table. Full of running, as you'd expect, and his work rate is excellent. But Wolves need more from Dicko. 5/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

A step backwards after his man of the match display on Saturday. No end product and, in the second half in particular, not enough tracking back. Like too many of his team mates he is showing no consistency. 4/10

Substitutes

Joao Teixeira (for Costa, 45)

A big chance for him to impress, particularly if Costa's absence is to be a substantial one, but he blew it. Didn't offer anything of note going forward and he was too weak defensively. 3/10

Bright Enobakhare (for Cavaleiro, 66)

A surprise to see him sent on at a time when Wolves were on the ropes. One mazy run aside, he did little. 5/10

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Dicko, 76)

Wolves barely mustered an attack while he was on the field. No impact. 4/10

Subs not used: Flatt, Hause, Coady, Price.
