Lambert was Wolves' chosen candidate after an 11-day search to find the sacked Walter Zenga's replacement.

He was announced as the club's new head coach on Saturday evening, shortly after Wolves extended their winless run to seven matches with a 3-2 defeat at home to Derby County.

The new boss takes over with Wolves 19th in the Championship table, just three points ahead of the relegation zone.

He is joined by first-team coach Stuart Taylor, a 41-year-old former youth coach under Lambert at Villa.

Rob Edwards, who took charge of two matches after Zenga's sacking, remains at the club as a first-team coach and will work alongside Taylor. It's understood that no assistant head coach will yet be appointed.

Fosun supremo Jeff Shi, who sacked Kenny Jackett and appointed Zenga in the summer, made the final call on Lambert after he and sporting director Kevin Thelwell led a 'thorough and diligent process'

Shi admitted that Wolves' new owners had learned some lessons in the past three months and were convinced Lambert was the man to transform their fortunes.

"Myself and Kevin have spent many hours with Paul during the lengthy interview process, and have been very impressed with his thoughts on football and his vision for Wolves," Shi said.

"Paul and ourselves share the same vision and the same mission, to achieve promotion from the Championship as soon as possible, and then aim for a higher goal in the Premier League."
