Next Wolves manager: Who are the contenders?

With Walter Zenga's reign now consigned to the history books, we take a look at the early contenders to become the next man in the Molineux managerial hotseat.

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce the head coach / manager of Sunderland

Comfortably the least surprising name on the list, the now ex-England boss grew up a Wolves fan and the ties are obvious.

Then again, it may not be the easiest appointment to make, given the nature of the 61-year-old's departure from the Three Lions set-up.

If the club decide he is the right man, Wolves may also have to move quickly, with Allardyce continuing to be linked with a return to Sunderland.

Andre Villas-Boas

The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss has been a name linked with Wolves lately and has a close relationship with Jorge Mendes.

Out of work since leaving Zenit St Petersburg in the summer, the 39-year-old's tenures at both Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane ended with the sack and he has no previous experience of the Championship. Then again, neither did Zenga.

Recently mooted for a possible move to Wolfsburg, who sacked Dieter Hecking last week.

Marco Silva

Former Sporting Lisbon manager Marco Silva might be considered for the role due to his links with Jorge Mendes.

The 39-year-old was in the running for the job in the summer before losing out to Walter Zenga, with his poor English seen as too much of a stumbling block.

Out of work since resigning from Olympiacos in the summer, Silva began his managerial career at Estoril and enjoyed some notable success, not only taking the unfancied outfit back into the Portuguese top flight but also qualifying for the Europa League.

A rather less successful season followed at Sporting Lisbon - though he did win the cup before being sacked. Guided Olympiacos to the Greek League title last season.

Nigel Pearson

Former Derby boss Nigel Pearson could be a controversial choice given his recent history.

The 53-year-old at least ticks one important box, in that he has a promotion from the Championship on his CV with Leicester City. But he exited the King Power Stadium under a cloud after his relationship with the club board broke down.

After almost a year out of the game - and a near miss with the Villa job - he returned with Derby County but lasted only a little longer at the Ipro Stadium then Zenga did at Molineux.

Perhaps now has too much baggage to be considered at this stage.

Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs is still waiting for his first job as manager, could the Wolves job entice him?

Another man touted for just about every job going at the moment, Giggs' history as a player at Manchester United and profile in the Far East could yet appeal to Fosun.

Has been out of work since ending his long association with United in the summer. For a while it looked as though the Welshman was being groomed as a future boss at Old Trafford but he missed out on the Swansea job.

Has indicated he would be prepared to work in the Championship, should any club match his ambition.

Pako Ayestaran

Pako Ayestaran is the former Valencia manager and might be tempted to give English football a test.

Every managerial search throws up a surprise name and this one is no different.

Ayestaran is best known as a long-serving assistant to Rafa Benitez at both Valencia and Liverpool, until a falling-out with the now Newcastle boss saw them go their separate ways. Since them Ayestaran has tried to forge his own path, with limited success.

Did win an unprecedented treble with Maccabi Tel Aviv but is currently out of work, having been sacked by Valencia after less than three months in charge.
