Wolves 3 Brentford 1 - player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers assesses the players after an impressive 3-1 home victory over Brentford.

Published

Carl Ikeme

He'll have been disappointed not to save Brentford's goal having got hands to it, but in truth it was a powerful shot from Sully Kaikai and Ikeme was offered no protection from his defence. Produced one good reflex save from Scott Hogan early doors. And then, when his team needed him to be, he was a commanding presence in the final 15 minutes when Brentford were chucking balls into the box. 7/10

Matt Doherty

Went steaming in for the ball - and missed - in the build-up to Kaikai's strike, leaving his man all alone to fire home. Also fortunate not to concede a penalty for handball. 5/10

Dominic Iorfa

Three solid performances in a week at centre half. Is this his best position now? Aerially very strong. His decision-making when in possession needs some work but he and Batth are forming an effective partnership. 7/10

Danny Batth (c)

Continued his excellent early-season form. A big week for the skipper who turned 26 on Wednesday and signed a new four-year contract on Thursday. Either side of those milestones he's played a big part in Wolves earning six points. The in-form Hogan only got one sniff at goal and Batth was the main reason the striker was kept quiet. 8/10

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

Tailed off a little bit in the last two matches (he was given the runaround by Matt Ritchie in midweek). He and Iorfa are the only ones to have played 270 minutes in a week and while Iorfa has got used to that kind of schedule over the past 18 months, Borthwick-Jackson was playing only his 18th professional game here. Almost cost an early goal when he wrongly thought he'd shepherded the ball out for a goal kick. It wasn't the only time he got caught in possession. 5/10

David Edwards

After a slow start to the season Edwards is excelling in Zenga's 4-3-3 formation. His sharpness has returned - he is quick to close players down and never shy to put his foot in. Went close with one first-half effort. Tireless workrate as usual but he was effective in both defence and attack (with a supporting role in the latter). Wanted to show Zenga that the boss could rely on him. He's certainly doing that. 8/10

Romain Saiss

An assured home debut for the Moroccan. Seems to be one step ahead of those around him when reading where the ball is going. Brentford rarely got any joy through the middle and that was largely down to him. 7/10

Prince Oniangue

Solid if not spectacular. Positionally he's improved a lot since his first couple of appearances. Playing an important team role but yet to really exert his dominance in midfield. Has all the attributes, though, and you feel he'll get better as the season goes on. 7/10

Helder Costa

Phenomenal work for the opening goal - won the ball with a strong challenge 20 yards inside his own half, then raced towards the opposition box with all the eagerness of a sexually-charged hare on the first day of spring before having the presence of mind to tee up Teixeira. Should have made it 2-0 shortly afterwards but his touch past the keeper took him too far. Drifted in and out of the game but great work rate again, as at Newcastle last week. 7/10

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Can someone check this guy is okay? He must feel like he's gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson today after taking kicks, barges, elbows and more from the Brentford defenders. The victim of a couple of nasty challenges. But Bodvarsson isn't the type of player to cry off. And there he was in stoppage time, racing forward to set up the third goal (after nearly being cut in two by Ryan Woods). Somehow leads the line with both strength and grace at the same time. 8/10

Joao Teixeira

The magician is back. After a lean few weeks Teixeira returned to the performance levels that saw him win man of the match in his home debut versus Reading - and he duly wins man of the match here too. Not just for his goals, though. Teixeira was Wolves' best player in the scoreless first half when he dazzled and bewildered the Brentford defenders, not least when he danced past two players and was quite clearly fouled in the box. Four perfect touches for his first Wolves goal, which oozed class. When he plays like this you have to ask what he's doing in the Championship. Consistency the key for him now. 9/10

Substitutes

Ivan Cavaleiro (for Costa, 69)

Great to see him get on the scoresheet with a coolly-taken, un-rushed finish in stoppage time. Said afterwards that Zenga wants him to improve the defensive side of his game before he earns a place in the first XI. 7/10

Joe Mason (for Teixeira, 77)

Wolves were very much on the back foot when he entered the fray. Tracked back well enough but not enough time to make a big impact. 6/10

Conor Coady (for Oniangue, 88)

Unlucky to be out of the side, given his early-season form. But his chance will come again. N/A

Subs not used: Lonergan, Stearman, Price, Gladon.
