Newcastle 2 Wolves 0 - player ratings
Tim Spiers rates the Wolves players after they are dumped out of the EFL Cup at Newcastle.
Andy Lonergan
Nothing he could do about either goal and he was generally untroubled for the rest of the night, barely having a save to make with Newcastle's shots either blocked or off target. Sound on corners and crosses. 7/10
Silvio
A long-awaited debut for the Portuguese international and he made a solid start to his Wolves career. Nothing too outlandish - just sensible passing and good positioning. Kept Gouffran quiet for the most part and made a couple of decent blocks. Rarely ventured forward. But him getting 90 minutes under his belt was one of the big positives of the evening. 7/10
Dominic Iorfa
His second game in succession at centre half and with the emergence of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson - plus Silvio now being available and Matt Doherty a regular - this may be his full-time position from now on with the full-back slots well stocked. The pick of the back four. 8/10
Kortney Hause
His first appearance since the second round versus Cambridge when he had a very poor night. Much improved here. No silly mistakes, good communication with his pal Iorfa and some decent distribution. 7/10
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson
A little slow to spot the danger for Matt Ritchie's opening goal. At times he struggled against Newcastle's big-money Scottish winger, who was the game's outstanding performer. A tough night for the youngster but he'll be stronger for it. 6/10
Joao Teixeira
A surprise to see him start after he exerted so much energy on Saturday. One wonderful moment when he won the ball back in midfield, glided past a challenge and played in Gladon on the right wing. But other than that he had little influence and was withdrawn at half time. Struggling to stamp his authority on games at the moment after that initial bright start in the opening fixtures. 6/10
Conor Coady (c)
A big test against Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey and he held his own. His job was to protect the back four and for the most part he did that, with little of Newcastle's attacking play going through the middle of the park. Captain for the night and you could hear him yelling for 90 minutes. 7/10
George Saville
Failing to replicate his form from the back end of last season. Worked tremendously hard but his passing range was limited. 6/10
Joe Mason
Not his night at all. Full of running but he was fairly anonymous and then taken off just past the hour mark. Just doesn't look as comfortable on the right of a front three. His best moments this season have come alongside Bodvarsson in a 4-4-2. 5/10
Paul Gladon
Again, he was a willing runner and pressed Newcastle high up the field but for most of the night he was working off scraps. One first half shot from close range which was well blocked, and then in injury time his bobbling effort was pushed wide by Darlow. An improvement on his debut and the 90 minutes will have done him good, but you can't say he's given Zenga too much food for thought when it comes to choosing him or Bodvarsson on Saturday against Brentford. 6/10
Jed Wallace
Wolves' best chance of the night came his way, but he lacked conviction when through on goal and made it easy for Karl Darlow. Seven minutes later Newcastle were 2-0 up. Plenty of endeavour, particularly in the first half when he won the ball and crossed for Gladon. After those two excellent performances against Blues and Cambridge he's not kicked on in the three that have followed. A confidence player who needs a run in the team - but is unlikely to get it with competition being so fierce. 6/10
Substitutes
Ola John (for Teixeira, 45)
A very lively debut. Created two opportunities almost from nothing, with a bold give-and-go that he arguably should have finished off but fired at Darlow. Then in stoppage time he went on a mazy, jinking run that ended with Gladon getting a shot away. Looks like he'll excite supporters. Wolves spent most of the second half struggling to make any headway, but if they were on the front foot you could imagine John running riot. Has had to be patient for his chance but he staked a claim for Saturday. 8/10
Jack Price (for Mason, 62)
One gorgeous pass when he picked out John over the top of the Newcastle back line. With Saiss and Coady ahead of him in the pecking order for a defensive midfield role, you wonder how often we'll see him in the coming weeks and months. 7/10
Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (for Wallace, 78)
The only player to feature in all 11 of Wolves' games so far this season. Not enough time to make a meaningful impact, especially with the result realistically no longer in doubt when he was sent on. 6/10
Subs not used: Ikeme, Batth, Doherty, Oniangue.
