Wolves boss Walter Zenga: Mistakes cost us
Walter Zenga said his Wolves team were masters of their own downfall after they lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the EFL Cup.
The home side scored two goals in two first-half minutes to reverse the scoreline from Saturday's Championship clash at St James' Park.
Wolves – who missed a golden chance to break the deadlock through Jed Wallace just before Newcastle opened the scoring – never looked like mounting a comeback.
And Zenga said: "We make a big gift in one minute and the game was over in that minute.
"Our two mistakes in defensive situation...when you make gifts in this way it's difficult to come back into the game.
"Before they scored the goal we had one great chance, unbelievable, one versus one with the keeper and we miss.
"The first goal, it's a clear mistake of the player in the defensive situation...and in the second goal we make a mistake with one pass immediately after we received a goal.
"The finish of the second goal is nice, very good, but what started the situation is from our big mistake. You cannot lose the ball in this way.
"The team reacted well (after the goals), in my opinion.
"Then in the second half we had more to open the game, but unfortunately we didn't score."
Newcastle had 13 shots to Wolves' four and also hit the crossbar, although the visitors had late chances through debutant Ola John and Paul Gladon.
Zenga said: "I didn't see a difference between the two teams.
"The two team played football, played to win the game, played in the spirit of the cup.
"I'm sad of course because we go out from the cup. But the game in my opinion was in that two minutes."
John and Portuguese international Silvio both made their long-awaited debuts in Wolves colours, with John coming off the bench at half time and the right-back playing the full 90 minutes.
Zenga said of the pair: "I know that I'm boring but I repeat...I arrive five days before the start of the season, Silvio was injured until 10 days ago and the last game he played was in May.
"Ola John arrived last week of August and the last game he played was in May.
"What is the solution to understand what they can do, or not? Games. In the training you can see something but it's not the same as a game.
"Sometimes we have to take some risks. We definitely have full trust in our players. On Saturday we play Brentford and they played last on Saturday...and they have had an easy game against Preston, they won 5-0 and have all week to prepare.
"Last Saturday we played against one very strong team. I have to protect the team and think about some rotation because it's normal that I don't want to lose one game, but it's my job to give the chance to everybody to be involved in the project.
"Unfortunately we go out from the cup. We have to accept the result and work on our mistakes."
