Walter Zenga has revealed how he came close to landing the Romania job earlier this summer.

Zenga, who has Romanian citizenship, lost out to Christoph Daum who was appointed last month.

"I was very close to signing for the Romanian national team, and they chose one other," he said yesterday.

Meanwhile the new Wolves boss revealed he has spoken to other Italians in the English game to sound out their opinions on his new job.

Zenga has known Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri for many years (the pair managed Catania and Juventus at the same time in Serie A).

And he has spoken with Watford's Walter Mazzarri and Swansea's Francesco Guidolin

"Many times last year I spoke with Claudio, and now I spoke with Walter in Watford, and two days ago I spoke with Guidolin," he said.

"When he's back (from pre-season) I'll speak with Claudio, it's normal for advice and questions to be discussed between coaches, this is normal.

"You share your experiences, your mentality, your idea."
