Wolves fans: We're going into the unknown

Stunned Wolves fans today said they're heading into the unknown under new boss Walter Zenga – with many sorry to see Kenny Jackett go.

Some believe Jackett should have been given more time now the club is armed with cash, although others have backed the club in making the change, even though the new season starts this weekend.

Jackett's three-year reign came to an end on Friday night, with the announcement after 11pm leaving fans shell-shocked.

Italian Zenga was swiftly installed a few hours later.

Speaking before the pre-season defeat to Swansea, the majority of supporters felt Jackett had been hard done by.

Matthew Scrivens, aged 26, from Albrighton, said: "I thought it was a little unfair on him. Last season wasn't great but he won League One at a canter and came up to the Championship and did really well.

Walter Zenga, new head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers, arrives at Molineux.

"He deserved the chance to show what he could do without without his hands tied behind his back."

Stuart Goodman, 39, from Cannock, said: "We have got to make sure we are doing everything for the right reasons.

"I think they should have given him until Christmas to see how he was getting on. But the new owners want some change."

Brian Meddings, 73, from Rugeley, who has been watching Wolves for more than 60 years, agreed.

He said: "He did very well when he first came, with limited resources. He ought to have been given a chance under the new set-up."

However, Paul Johnston, 50, from Stafford, believes the time is right for a change.

He said: "Now we have got plenty of cash and are hopefully going up to the Premier League we need the right manager.

"I don't think Jackett has managed top players."

Fans admitted they knew little about incoming Zenga, who was spotted at Patshull Park Hotel near Wolverhampton after meeting supporters outside Molineux on Saturday.

Martyn Randle, 59, from Kidderminster, said: "I haven't heard of him. I thought it was Arsene Wenger first of all! But if you support the team you have got to get behind them."

Season ticket holder Roger Anderson, 68, said: "He was one of the best goalkeepers I've ever seen, but as a manager he has not got a successful track record."

And Simon Francis, of Penkridge, said: "It's a leap into the unknown, but we've gone from facing a season of mediocrity to something that now looks very exciting."

Wolverhampton South West MP, Rob Marris, who has been going to see Wolves play since he was just 10 years old, said he could 'understand' why Kenny Jackett had been sacked and admitted it was 'not a surprise'.

He said: "It is not a surprise that Kenny has been asked to leave. He has been a great servant to Wolves however recent results have not been as good as many of us had hoped for. I wish him every success in the future, he still has a lot to contribute to football.

"It is exciting news that the club has new owners to build on the great work done by Steve Morgan. I can understand why the new owners would want to complete the transition by hiring a new manager. I wish Mr Zenga and the new owners and the club all the very best and I will be there as ever supporting from the stands."

After guiding Wolves to the League One title with a record points haul in his first season and narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs the following year, Jackett could do no wrong in the eyes of many fans.

However, the relationship soured slightly last term as the club finished a disappointing 14th. Wolverhampton Councillor Alan Bolshaw added: "He had long enough but did not come up with the goods, he had to go."

The new manager was one of the world's greatest goalkeepers and is known for a flamboyant lifestyle on and off the pitch. After retiring from playing in 1999, he enjoyed a brief stint as an actor in Italian soap opera 'Costanza' whilst dating Italian actress and lingerie model Hoara Borselli.

He has four children from three wives and has now been married to Romanian Raluca Rebedea,22 years his junior, since 2005.
