Mike Williamson delighted to stay at Wolves

Wolves defender Mike Williamson has spoken of his delight after Wolves extended the Newcastle United defender's loan deal until January 16.

The no-nonsense centre-back has been one of the stand-out players in recent weeks and the 32-year-old was only too happy to stay at Molineux.

"It's great news," said Williamson.

"I really enjoyed the first week and integrated well with the lads and the gaffer.

"There is a really good group here and I was more than delighted when the opportunity came to extend the deal.

"Hopefully we can get some good results and start to look forward.

"I wanted to get back playing like anyone wants.

"It can be rare to go into a club and feel like you really fit straightaway but that is what it has felt like for me here."

Williamson has been a big reason why Wolves have only conceded one goal in the three games he has featured in to date.

"It has only been a short time but it feels like the right thing to have done.

"You have to keep yourself fit and ready.

"Sometimes it is difficult when you are not playing and you can lose heart but it is about being professional and making sure you do what is necessary and keep yourself going.

"In this line of work you never know what is around the corner and the opportunity has arisen for me here which has been a good one – now we need to push on."

"I think we have been unfortunate not to have picked up more points from the three games.

"Against Burnley I felt we had the better of the opportunities.

"Bristol City was a big disappointment and we know that but I felt Birmingham and Burnley were both good performances.

"Hopefully we can maintain those levels and turn those performances into more wins.

"In terms of the talent in the squad I think it is better than the current league position.

"Sometimes it just needs that bit of confidence and momentum to start things off and start moving up the table."

Williamson is loving the added responsibility as being one of the older statesman and is just happy to be playing football again.

"Newcastle has quite a young squad too so it is quite similar in that respect," he added.

"For me I pride myself in my communication on the pitch especially and I feel that respect has gone well.

"From the first time I spoke to the gaffer he said this was potentially a very good fit for me because it is a young group and that is how it has turned out.

"It is just great to be playing games again.

"Ask any footballer, it is frustrating when you don't play and as soon as you know you are involved and playing in games, in a footballer's mind the world is a better place!

"It has been a good opportunity for me and the games came thick and fast in that first week and now I am looking forward to playing more.

"Next it is Ipswich, and that will be another tough test.

"They will be an organised and well-drilled team, similar to Burnley, where we put in a very good team performance.

"We created the better opportunities in that one so if we can take that sort of level into Saturday and defend like we have been we have a chance of going there and getting three points."
