Wolves name latest duo for Hall of Fame

Wolves today revealed John McAlle and Johnny Hancocks as the two latest names that will join their club's Hall of Fame next month.

The popular duo will join the roll of honour for the end-of-season dinner at Telford International Centre on May 6, as part of Wolves' annual showpiece.

The late Hancocks, born in Shropshire, spent ten years at Wolves from 1946 to 1956 and made his name as a powerful right winger with an eye for goal. He passed away in 1994 at the age of 74.

At just 5ft 4ins tall and by no means a 'flying' winger - as he hated to travel by air - he was restricted to just three England caps because of Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney.

But he made 378 appearances – 18th in Wolves' all-time list – at club level and scored 167 goals for Wolves, a total bettered by only three other players.

He hit double figures for 10 successive seasons and his tally of 24 in the 1953-54 campaign, where Wolves became champions of England for the first time, remains a club-record for a wide man.

John McAlle as he is today.

Defender McAlle arrived at Molineux just under a decade, after Hancocks had completed his spell in gold'n'black.

Arriving as a 15-year-old in 1965, he went on to stay for 16 years, with his 509 games in all competitions putting him in the top six of the club's appearance-makers.

McAlle, now 65, patrolled the centre of defence for the best part of a decade and formed a much-vaunted partnership with Frank Munro.

He appeared in all 12 UEFA Cup ties during the 1971-72 season, before Wolves lost in the two-legged final to Tottenham Hotspur.

He did lift silverware two years later, with victory in the League Cup Final against Manchester City at Wembley.

A broken leg would cost him his place in the team which won the 1980 League Cup against Nottingham Forest.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "We are delighted to announce that Johnny Hancocks and John McAlle are the next two Wolves legends to be inducted to the club's Hall of Fame.

"That accolade is fully deserved for their contribution to some extremely notable successes in the club's history.

"We are all looking forward to honouring those achievements at this year's End-of-Season dinner."
