England Under-21 head coach Gareth Southgate today insisted Luke Shaw can handle the weight of expectation at Molineux after returning to the international fold.

The Manchester United left-back's fitness has been questioned by Old Trafford boss Louis Van Gaal and England manager Roy Hodgson.

But he's made Southgate's squad for their Euro 2015 play-off game with Croatia at Molineux next week.

Southgate said: "The world for Luke has changed enormously as this time last year he was just establishing himself at Southampton.

"Now everything he does is in the spotlight but he'll cope with that. It'll take some adjusting but he'll enjoy the experience and it'll be good for him.

"I don't think there's any question mark about him. I was at the game last Saturday and he looked as if he'd been in that environment forever. That's Luke, he adjusts and adapts to things on the field as quick as any player I've seen. He thrives on the field under the pressure but he's quite quiet off it."

England host Croatia at Wolves' ground on October 10 before going to Vinkovci on October 14 for the second leg.

And Albion's Saido Berahino will lead the line for England, after just missing out on a call-up for the senior side.

Southgate said: "When someone like Saido's in the form he's in, he's going to get talked about for a senior squad call-up.

"But these matches are really invaluable for his development and the team. I'm sure he will be keen to play with us and progress and he will be able to push his way into Roy's thinking."

Arsenal's Calum Chambers, Shaw's ex-Southampton team-mate, is also in Southgate's squad.

And Southgate insisted he wants his players to show they have the desire to play for England at any level.

He said: "If we want to be successful at senior level in the future, humility has got to be part of that process.

"Having players who are prepared to represent their country and do what's required is a positive step."
