Max Clayton will spend a week on trial at Wolves, boss Kenny Jackett confirmed today.

The highly-rated 19-year-old Crewe forward, who is out of contract, has arrived at Compton after a similar spell at Sunderland.

A move to the Black Cats broke down over Crewe's demands of £1m in compensation and now he is set to try his luck with Wolves.

Alex have been trying to persuade Clayton, who has played for England at every level up to Under-19s, to sign a new contract since November but no agreement has been reached.

Clayton was being eyed by some of the top clubs in the Premier League before an ankle injury sidelined him last season.

And Wolves are one of several clubs keen to offer him a chance.

"It's been agreed Max comes and trains with us this week," said head coach Jackett.

"He's 19-years-old, can play in the forward positions and has some variety in terms of being able to play in different systems.

"He was a very promising forward at Crewe before his ankle injury last year which wrote off most of his season.

"We're just going to have a look at him for a week and see if we like him and he likes us.

"Being a Crewe lad he's been brought up the right way and technically is a very good player."
