Michael Jacobs: Fear factor set Carl Ikeme on course for Wolves clean sheet record
Michael Jacobs has revealed the secret behind Wolves' club record clean sheets total – the scariness of keeper Carl Ikeme.
The bigger picture of course that victory tomorrow at Crewe would see Wolves promoted if Rotherham fail to beat Bradford tonight.
But the sideshow is that more records could come their way with another three points.
Kenny Jackett's side matched Wolves' best sequence of 23 league shutouts from 1923-24 in last week's 2-0 win against Peterborough.
Success on the road would equal the most overall wins in a season and most away victories - 28 and 13 respectively, both achieved in the League championship title win in 1958-59.
Naturally, the record that concerns Ikeme is the one most closely associated with keeping the ball out of the net.
And Jacobs believes Ikeme's determination towards achieving that 'goal' shouldn't be underestimated.
"He's always alert, he sets himself high standards and I wouldn't want him getting on my back if we conceded because he's a big lad and he can be quite scary!" said Jacobs.
"Carl Ikeme has been probably the best goalkeeper in the league and it will be a shambles if he's not selected in the PFA team of the year.
"He plays to earn a clean sheet in every game and that's what he's about.
"He's set himself that standard all season and with the boys in front of him, they've worked so hard and they deserve all the plaudits they get.
"When you look at the record for conceding goals, the keeper and the back four have been different class.
"They're always thinking about clean sheets and that's what you want from your back four."
Jacobs scored his first Wolves goal with his header in the home game against Crewe in the 2-0 win on Boxing Day.
And the six-goal midfielder is targeting an end-of-season burst after going on a 'net spree' on a previous occasion.
"I think I did notch but I'd forgotten all about that one!" he said.
"Hopefully I can get another one against them tomorrow.
"I got one against Oldham and then four in the next three games after that so hopefully something like that can happen again."
