Sam Ricketts: Wolves will push to keep run going

Captain Sam Ricketts today declared there's no time for Wolves to celebrate their place in the record books as he praised Kenny Jackett for bringing a winning mentality to the club.

Last night's 4-1 victory at Swindon was Wolves' ninth win in a row to earn a club record as they maintained their two-point lead at the top of League One after victories for Leyton Orient, Brentford and Rotherham.

Wolves are now preparing for the visit of struggling Shrewsbury on Saturday, the third of a nine-match spell in 28 days.

And Ricketts said they can't afford to dwell on their place in the history books.

"We won't be relaxing or celebrating because we've won nine in a row," said the skipper. "It's fantastic but there's one thing we want and that's promotion.

"We're going to have to win plenty more games between now and the end of the season to achieve that and hopefully that will continue on Saturday.

"It's great and we're three points closer but there's still a long way to go. We need to keep this run going and hopefully we'll get our end rewards."

Ricketts believes Jackett deserves huge credit for the winning run after bringing a winning belief back to Molineux. "I don't think you can ever get bored of winning.

"I said to myself privately 'you can't beat winning'," he said. "It's a great feeling and it doesn't matter who you play against – to win is the whole idea why we train all week.

"And as players, fans and as a club, you always want to win. The gaffer brought that in right from the start of the pre-season and it's the same in every training game, he wants winners.

"Everything is kept a record of – how many games everyone has won and lost, and it ensures we keep that competitive spirit and a will to win."

Now they have the club record, Ricketts urged Wolves to keep winning to maintain their lead at the top.

With 12 games left, Wolves have 76 points – 16 less than the club-record highest – and only eight less than Doncaster won the title with last season.

"It's a fantastic standard in this division this season for all the top five teams who in virtually any other season, would all have enough points to be in the top two quite easily," said Ricketts.

"But fortunately we're at the top setting the pace and it's down to us to keep doing what we've done recently.

"There are still 12 games to go and 36 points to play for – it's a huge amount of points."

Wolves won last night despite tailing off alarmingly in the second-half, when Swindon replied through Michael Smith at 3-0 and also hit the angle through Jay McEveley at 3-1.

Ricketts added: "When you go 3-0 up, you maybe subconsciously relax a little bit and stop doing the things that got us ahead in the first place.

"Secondly, a team 3-0 down at half-time has no pressure on it in the second half.

"They can play and take chances and do things that they wouldn't otherwise do – they were losing 3-0 so what's the harm in conceding a couple more?

"We spoke about the fact they're a good footballing side before the game and in the second half, they really started to play the football which we expected.

"But in the first half, I thought we were devastating going forwards."
