Wolves won the battle of the League One heavyweights as their march to automatic promotion continued with arguably their most ruthless performance of the season to end Brentford's 19-match unbeaten run.

Goals from James Henry in first-half time added on and Michael Jacobs's second successive brace in 71 and 85 gave Kenny Jackett's side their sixth win in a row and moved them back into second place behind Leyton Orient on goals scored.

After the break, Brentford bossed the possession but couldn't penetrate a rock-solid Wolves defence superbly marshalled by Danny Batth and Scott Golbourne, leaving the visitors to punish them on the counter.

Head coach Jackett named an unchanged team to the side that beat Notts County 2-0 last week.

But there were changes on the bench, where Dave Edwards returned and David Davis was in the 18 again, with George Elokobi and Ibrahim Keita making way.

Wolves, wearing their all-purple away kit, kicked off attacking the end where their sell-out 1,600 following were massed.

But chances were as thin on the ground as the heavily sanded pitch, which saw both teams struggle to keep the ball on the bobbly surface.

Wolves were first to show in the 16th minute with a right-foot shot from Bakary Sako after cutting inside that keeper David Button carried behind for a fruitless corner.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the 28th minute when Sako put Nouha Dicko through but Button did superbly to dart from his line and smother the danger.

The loose ball fell to Michael Jacobs, but the former Derby wideman was put off by Tony Craig sliding in and the chance was lost.

Three minutes later, Brentford had a sight of goal as a free kick reached the unmarked Jonathan Douglas at the far post.

But Danny Batth, who had conceded the set-piece for a foul on Clayton Donaldson, threw himself at the shot to block for a corner.

Carl Ikeme was forced into his first serious save three minutes before the break, diving full length to his right to push away a firm drive from Alan Judge after a well-worked free-kick routine.

But Wolves regrouped to create a superb chance for Sako then Henry, before taking the lead.

First Sako unselfishly – but perhaps wrongly – opted to square to Henry after passing up the chance to shoot himself after a superb run from the French winger right at the heart of the Bees' defence a minute before the break.

Henry was put off by a fine and crucial sliding challenge from Douglas.

But Wolves fans didn't have to wait long for the goal they craved.

Kevin McDonald was the architect, taking possession after a throw-in on the right and cutting the ball back for Henry, who found the top corner of the net with a cross-cum-shot.

Brentford had the first chance of the second half as George Saville's wayward shot took a horrible deflection and dropped fractionally wide in the 62nd minute.

The home side were now enjoying most of the possession but they were struggling to break down a resilient Wolves defence.

Judge again threatened from distance but his 30-yard effort flew just wide on 67.

Wolves were happy to hit Brentford on the counter-attack and it almost paid off in the 68th minute when Jacobs wriggled through onto Sako's pass and hit Button's legs with an angled low drive.

And the same combination paid off spectacularly as Wolves doubled their lead.

Dicko's run down the inside left pulled the defence towards him ad Sako brilliantly spotted Jacobs all alone racing through the middle.

The former Derby man netted with a toe-poked finish.

A minute later Dave Edwards made his comeback when he came on for Henry to give the team extra energy.

Dicko missed the chance to make it 3-0 on 76 after he missed his kick when clean through.

But it didn't matter as Jacobs netted a superb third for Wolves, picking his spot with a curling shot in the top corner after controlling Scott Golbourne's cut-back from the left on the edge of the area.
