Carl Ikeme may have to wait for Wolves recall
Carl Ikeme has taken the first steps towards a Wolves recall – but Kenny Jackett said today he will delay a decision on whether he wins his place back immediately.
The keeper returned to full training yesterday for the first time since breaking a bone in his left hand in the 1-1 draw at Tranmere on New Year's Day.
Aaron McCarey has proved a capable replacement since, keeping three clean sheets in his five games and conceding just twice, and Jackett must now make his choice for Saturday's visit of Notts County.
"Carl started full training yesterday and he's fine," said head coach Jackett.
"He was doing most things at the back end of last week where he worked individually with the goalkeeping coach (Pat Mountain).
"So he was pushing to be ready, but we held him back until yesterday morning, and, as expected, he looked fine.
"I'm feeling very positive he's back but whether I continue with Aaron or start with Carl again, I've got two very good goalkeepers.
"We want to get that department as strong as possible again and that means back-up as well."
Jackett will assess Ikeme in training this week before deciding, but the boss admitted the 27-year-old may need an Under-21s outing first.
"I'll assess him this week; it's good to see him back but we won't take anything for granted," he said.
"Hopefully he has no further problems because if that's the case, I've every confidence that he'll push himself and respond well.
"Might he need an Under-21s game first? Possibly."
