Former Wolves boss McCarthy, now in charge of the Championship play-off challengers, is understood to have enquired about trying to take Doyle on loan to Portman Road.

But Wolves have knocked back the Tractor Boys' bid as Kenny Jackett looks to keep the 30-year-old as part of his changing strikeforce.

Doyle has been out in the cold in recent weeks and found himself the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Middlesbrough.

But it appears that hasn't transpired and McCarthy tried to re-unite him with Wolves old boys Christophe Berra, Stephen Hunt and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

Instead, the Ireland international made a telling comeback for Wolves last night, replacing Lee Evans as a half-time substitute at Oldham with the score 0-0 before Jackett's side won 3-0.
