Kenny Jackett: Wolves have the edge in the race for promotion
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett today insisted his side have the advantage in the League One promotion race.
Saturday's 3-3 draw at Rotherham saw Wolves join Leyton Orient at the top on points after the Londoners' 3-2 home defeat by Crawley – the Os' fourth league game without a win.
In-form Brentford closed the gap to the play-off places to within a point after winning 3-0 at Preston – their 10th victory in their last 12 games.
But head coach Jackett has long been convinced Wolves' destiny is in their own hands and, as they prepared for home games against Crewe on Boxing Day and Orient on Sunday, he reiterated his team can shape their season.
"It's very tight now but we're one of the sides up there with an opportunity going forward," said Jackett.
"We're pleased with that – we aren't playing catch-up – and it's down to ourselves going into the Christmas period and the second half of the season.
"It's about what we do as a group and a club that will shape our future but it's all in our hands. I'm very pleased we're one of the teams involved in it."
Jackett dropped 12-goal top scorer Leigh Griffiths after accusing him of a lack of effort in the 2-0 defeat to MK Dons last week and revealed he gave Bjorn Sigurdarson a rare start to provide his side with more pace up front.
"Bringing some pace into the team were behind my thoughts for starting Bjorn," he said.
"I wanted to give him a chance to really see if we can get one player who can consistently run in behind. We've lacked that – some pace in our front-line. Pace troubles defenders and there have been too many times when our build-up has been contained and in front of sides."
Jackett admitted he must work on his defence after Wolves leaked three goals for the first time since April.
"We'll analyse the goals because it's rare for us to concede three," he said.
"If you concede that many it won't help you to regularly pick up points.
"Although the players tell me they thought the first one was offside and that was why Scott Golbourne let Nouha Dicko go."
Striker Jake Cassidy missed Saturday's game with swollen glands and is set to go on a course of antibiotics which could rule him out for a week.
