Wolves striker Leigh Griffiths given 20-goal target
Leigh Griffiths was today handed a 20-plus goal target to catapult Wolves back into the Championship – and another 20 for the season after that.
The 22-year-old hot-shot found the net 28 times on loan at Hibernian last season.
But former Wolves boss and current Scotland assistant manager Mark McGhee believes Griffiths still needs to prove himself.
And step one is becoming the first Wolves player since Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in 2008-09 to score 20 goals in a season.
"This season is a good opportunity for him," said McGhee, who managed Wolves from 1995-98.
"He's got to be looking to get 20-plus goals in League One to give himself a platform to get into the Championship with Wolves, and then getting 20 goals in that division. He's got to progress.
"I'm sure Wolves will be challenging for promotion this year to get back into the Championship, so he'll be playing at that level next season.
"But after being a relative unknown last season, he's still got to prove he can get goals regularly in the Championship." McGhee believes Griffiths, who won his third full cap in Scotland's 3-2 defeat to England at Wembley on Wednesday, can establish himself.
He added: "He's a player who will settle at a higher level than League One.
"He's proved he can play at a higher level but he's still to prove he can play at a really high level, including international football.
"He's had one good game in Croatia in a terrific performance which earned him his place in the squad for England, so he hasn't done that yet.
"But he's given us an awful lot of encouragement to keep picking him. He was unfortunate not to start against England.
"But he's played his way into the squad now and he's got to keep performing well in League One to stay in the squad. Getting goals will give him confidence."
