Wolves wait on Kevin McDonald move
Wolves were today facing an anxious wait to see if midfielder Kevin McDonald becomes their second summer signing.
A bid of around £750,000 was accepted by Sheffield United yesterday after Wolves triggered a release clause in the 24-year-old's contract, leaving the Blades powerless to turn down the offer.
The player and his agent travelled to Compton for a medical and talks.
But, after undergoing the medical, it is understood McDonald wanted 24 hours to think over the move with several issues still hanging in the air.
With Wolves having made their pitch, other clubs have now been alerted to McDonald's position and they could end up in a fight for his signature, similar to that which saw them lose out to Leeds earlier this summer for Luke Murphy.
Desperate to avoid selling their star asset to a League One rival, United are planning to make McDonald a counter offer to entice him to stay.
But even though that package is not expected to top what Wolves have put on the table, McDonald could end up agreeing to stay.
Sources say he wants to talk things through with Blades boss David Weir before making a final decision, which could lead to a change of heart as McDonald is believed to be undecided on his next move.
And it is also understood he is under pressure from his family to stay in south Yorkshire. Either way, head coach Kenny Jackett is determined to press on with his search for new signings as he looks to McDonald to follow the free transfer arrival of new captain Sam Ricketts.
Jackett wants up to five new faces before the transfer window shuts on September 2, with improvements targeted in the wide areas and up front.
"We need to do better on the ball," said Jackett. "We need players capable of doing that. We're working hard to get players in at the right price."
