Video: Carl Ikeme looks forward to Wolves' home opener with Gillingham

Carl Ikeme today insisted Wolves are "in a good place" as he declared the squad is strong enough to prosper in League One this season.

Ikeme has started the campaign as first-choice keeper ahead of fit-again Wayne Hennessey and Aaron McCarey.

And the 27-year-old, now one of the most experienced players at Molineux, believes the influx of young talent under head coach Kenny Jackett this summer is the way forward for the club.

"I believe Wolves are in a good place at the moment," said Ikeme.

"I would be more than happy with the current squad. We've got a few young lads and they just need to find their feet a bit, which is understandable. We've got a few experienced lads who need to help them get that experience and once we get on a run we can keep it going.

"It's good to blood them in the team."

Ikeme is keeping Hennessey at bay for now but he isn't resting on his laurels.

"I'm playing and that's the only thing I can say," he said.

"I've started the first two games but I'm not taking anything for granted. I'm just concentrating on what I need to do, really.

"There's always competition. There's Wayne and Aaron now and we've had Dorus De Vries in the past. It's just the way it is here and it's the same for all of us."

"We've only played one league game – no one needs to panic!"

Ikeme added: "They're trying to change things and freshen things up with a lot of young lads.

"They're bringing a lot of enthusiasm which is what we need now, especially after back-to-back relegations.

"Sometimes you just need to change and that's what's happening and hopefully in a few months, the team has got into a rhythm and we will all say it was the right move.

"I truly believe we need these changes and hopefully we will start winning games."

Wolves have failed to score in their first two games, drawing 0-0 at Preston before a 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Morecambe.

But Ikeme believes the blooding of the youngsters is vital for their development.

"The draw at Preston wasn't a bad result on reflection and hopefully we can push on," he said.

"We had a few injuries and a few people out on Tuesday so we blooded a few young lads.

"It's important to get them into a real game to play in and to play for Wolves.

"I know a few of them have been out on loan but it's different when you come back to a big club like Wolves, there's more pressure.

Ikeme was speaking at the launch of Tipton & Coseley Building Society's new Wolves Saver Account.
