Wolves to receive Football League founder member blue plaque
Wolves will receive a specially commissioned blue plaque in recognition of the club's role in the formation of the Football League – as they take on fellow founder member Preston North End at the weekend.
All 12 founder members of the league will be recognised for their place in history as the league celebrates its 125th anniversary.
The first season kicked off on September 8, 1888 and featured Accrington, Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston, Stoke, Albion and Wolves.
Eight of the 'originals' are in action on the opening weekend of the new season in six specially selected fixtures. Wolves visit Preston on Saturday – in Kenny Jackett's first game in charge – and Sheffield United entertain Notts County in League One.
Burnley host Bolton and Derby face Blackburn in the Championship and Accrington travel to Newport in League Two. Also in the bottom division, Rochdale welcome Hartlepool to mark the 137th meeting between the sides in the most played fixture in League history.
Accrington Stanley were presented with a plaque – on behalf of their predecessor club Accrington FC – along with Everton ahead of their recent friendly that recreated the Everton v Accrington match from the opening day of the 1888-89 season.
Wolves have sold 4,500 tickets for Saturday's opening game at Deepdale. A further 400 are on sale but there will be none available on the day as the match.
Wolves vice president Baroness Rachael Heyhoe Flint said: "We are extremely proud to founder members of the league and it is pleasing to be recognised. Anything that fosters a good spirit at the game between the fans is to be highly commended."
Wolves head of communications Matt Grayson said: "The plaque is likely to take pride of place in our new club museum."
