Wolves target Luke Murphy signs for Leeds

Wolves suffered a transfer blow today as Crewe midfielder Luke Murphy signed for Championship club Leeds.

The 23-year-old signed a three-deal at Elland Road after the clubs agreed a fee of around £1million yesterday and he travelled for talks.

Leeds' offer is said to better those of Wolves and Blackburn, who are believed to have upped their offer.

Murphy was left behind from Crewe's trip to Scotland at the weekend, and instead travelled to Elland Road.

Leeds boss Brian McDermott said: "He is a player I've known about for a long time.

"I've watched his career progress and I feel he was the best player in the division last year.

"Luke certainly fits the profile of player that we're looking to attract: He's young, hungry, he wants to work hard and he is very talented."

Crewe boss Steve Davis believed Wolves' status as a League One team now meant they were always fighting a losing battle.

He said: "The challenge of the Championship was something he was more interested in rather than League One.

"He has already proved himself at this level and he has gone beyond that now."

Wolves will now look to move on to pursue other targets and remain in the market for Bolton full-back Sam Ricketts.

They have agreed a fee but they may have to move players on first before landing him.

There are numerous Championship clubs in for the 31-year-old, but the former Swansea man is believed to be excited about linking up again with boss Kenny Jackett.

Wolves, who have been linked with a free transfer move for Charlton left-back Cedric Evina, 21, have had some joy in the transfer market after snapping up Victor Wagner, a 17-year-old Danish centre-back.

The youngster has penned a two-year contract after winning the Danish under-17s title with Esbjerg, where he was said to be their stand-out player last season.

Wagner said on Twitter: "Signed with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC yesterday! I'm looking forward to a good season with the under-18s."

He has had trials with Wolves, Albion, Stoke and Huddersfield. His agent Gulli Tomasson said: "Victor's a strong, physical defender, whose main attributes are his marking and his aerial ability."

"Victor visited England during the winter, where he had trials with Stoke, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton.

"But we considered Wolverhampton best suited to his interests and his development.

"He starts in their under-18s squad, where the coaches are very much looking forward to working with him."

Wagner follows Tim Jakobsson as a Wolves teenage import from Scandinavia after the Swedish midfielder signed last summer.
