Steve Davis set to miss out on Wolves job
Wolves are on course to finish the week with a new head coach in place – but fans wanting Steve Davis could be disappointed.
The Crewe boss with the rising reputation following his impressive start in management at Gresty Road has been a big favourite.
That's with both bookies and on the social networks, as the days count down to a fourth appointment in 15 months.
But the 47-year-old one-time South Bank regular confirmed last night he has had no contact with Molineux officials.
And that seems to discount any chance of him being handed the task of leading the club's revival after two disastrous seasons.
Wolves refuse to give any hint about their plans amid the widespread speculation raging around the identity of the man to succeed the short-lived Dean Saunders.
But chief executive Jez Moxey and his companion in the process, head of football Kevin Thelwell, have now interviewed all the main contenders and are ready to take their findings to chairman and owner Steve Morgan.
He will have the final say but be heavily guided by Moxey's recommendations. Birmingham-born Davis has been the subject of relentless chatter about the post and would be a popular choice with fans.
He came in second behind Owen Coyle last week when more than 7,000 voted in an Express & Star poll.
But the Crewe manager remains bemused by the talk and said: "I'm obviously aware of all the speculation but, really, there is nothing I can say because there has been no contact.
"I have heard nothing from my chairman about an approach and I'm sure a club of Wolves' stature would go through the correct channels.
"All I'm concerned with is a barbecue with the family and discussing a couple of possible targets for Crewe with my assistant."
That seems to leave the field clear for long-running contender Kenny Jackett and Owen Coyle, both of whom have spoken to Wolves, and less certainly former England boss Steve McClaren.
The gap in the club's football management has not stopped the transfer rumours rumbling, with Wolves linked over the weekend to out-of-contract Southampton defender Dan Seaborne.
The 26-year-old had loan spells at Charlton and Bournemouth last season.
