Kevin Thelwell to help Wolves find new boss

Kevin Thelwell will play a key role in deciding the next Wolves manager – as former Molineux striker Don Goodman stressed the importance of getting the call right.

Thelwell has been charged with managing the recruitment process of identifying Saunders' successor in conjunction with the Molineux board.

Chairman Steve Morgan sacked Mick McCarthy and his subsequent appointments Terry Connor, Stale Solbakken and Saunders have flopped, the latter two being the only two candidates interviewed.

It's easily the highest profile assignment former academy manager Thelwell, who has been director of football operations and recruitment since December, has been handed in his five years at the club.

But it's one the board are determined to drive through as they look to put a proper and thorough selection process in place.

They are determined to appoint the right man to take the club forward to recover from one of the blackest periods in the club's history.

Goodman followed his old Wolves manager Graham Taylor in insisting the club must ensure they get it right this time.

He said; "This has to be the biggest appointment for a long time because they simply have to get it right.

"They can't afford to get it wrong, because where Wolves are now has to be the lowest point they get to a.

"They have to bounce back into the Championship at the first attempt and kick on. That's not going to be easy.

"Kevin has been entrusted with a big responsibility and I'm sure the club wouldn't have handed him that if they didn't believe he could make the right choice.

"What it shows is they have implicit faith in his ability to get it right."

Goodman believes Wolves need a long-term plan to achieve lasting success.

He said: "They need three years to get a plan together. They need to strip the playing staff out and bring in a younger, hungrier group to try to do what Norwich and Southampton did."

But Goodman expressed his sympathy for Saunders after he became the fourth Wolves manager to lose his job in 15 months.

He said: "I could understand it based on results, but there's no question that group of players have now got three or four managers the sack.

"You look at results but, more than that, I look at performances. And they were way, way off."
