Mel Eves calls for a probe into Wolves slump

Former Wolves favourite Mel Eves today called for an Ofsted-style report on the club to get to the root of the problems that have left them on the brink of relegation.

The 56-year-old believes an independent body should conduct a 'root and branch' assessment of the entire club.

He believes it should come from chairman Steve Morgan downwards to determine the reasons behind the shocking decline.

It has left Wolves facing the prospect of becoming the first club to twice fall from the first to the third tiers in consecutive years.

Eves was a League Cup winner with the club in 1980 and is now an agent and regular Wolves watcher.

He said: "The first thing I would do is inspect the whole structure and culture of the club because it really needs to change.

"There has been gross mismanagement from the top downwards. Steve Morgan has to hold his hands up because he's made a lot of mistakes and Jez Moxey and others below them.

"If it was a school and Ofsted came in, it would be a failure. You've got to look to see if the governors and the headmaster are doing the right job.

"Steve Morgan has made a lot of poor decisions but he wants the club to succeed so therefore he has to question the advice he's getting and the people around him.

"Steve has to bring the right people in to assess the situation to start with and make a decision on Dean Saunders.

"They need to get a winning mentality and one which treats the fans, the players and the former players fairly and one where everyone gets involved in a family-type atmosphere at the club."

Eves believes Wolves are paying for a "culture of fear" which has developed that has led to staff becoming too protective of their own positions at Molineux.

He said: "In my opinion there's been a culture of fear through the club for a few years – this isn't something that's happened over 12 months.

"The writing's been on the wall for some time but it hasn't been addressed."

The jury is out on Saunders after 20 points from 19 games but Eves doesn't blame the current boss.

He said: "I don't blame Dean for what's gone on although he probably could have done better.

"But he probably didn't realise how big the problems were with the make-up of the squad and the fact the dressing room wasn't right."

Eves despaired of the awful performance in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Burnley.

He said: "It was clueless and a disgrace for a team of Wolves' standing."
