Former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was today appointed as Ipswich Town manager with Terry Connor named as his assistant at Portman Road.

McCarthy spent five-and-a-half years at Wolves before he was sacked in February and replaced by Connor in the Molineux dugout.

The 53-year-old, who was linked with the previous vacancies at Blackburn, Nottingham Forest and Bolton, has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the East Anglia club.

"I'm obviously delighted to have been given the job as Ipswich Town manager and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead," said McCarthy, who will bring his Ipswich side to Molineux on Saturday, December 29.

"It's a fantastic football club, with a proud tradition and history and a terrific fanbase. While the long-term ambition is to take the club back into the Premier League, it's clear that the first priority is to get some confidence back into the team and start climbing the table."

McCarthy has led all of the three clubs he has managed to the Championship play-offs and won promotion as champions with Wolves and Sunderland.

Connor, McCarthy's assistant at Wolves, replaced him at the helm but following the club's relegation to the Championship reverted to the role of assistant when Stale Solbakken arrived in the close season.

However, Connor was sacked by Wolves last month after 13 years of service at Molineux.

Ipswich Town chief executive Simon Clegg admitted McCarthy's history of winning promotion to the Premier League was a factor in his appointment.

He added: "We are under no illusions of the challenge ahead for this club given our position in the table but we feel we have the right manager to lead that challenge."
