Danny Batth today admitted he knew little about his first goal for Wolves.

The Brierley Hill-born centre-back opened his account with a bizarre effort which went in off his knee in last night's 3-1 win at Northampton in the Capital One Cup.

But Batth, who was playing only his second competitive game for Wolves and first since a 2-1 win in the same competition against Southend two years ago, accepted his freak goal – which helped secured a third round tie at Chelsea – was a strange one.

"I like to put myself about in the box but it hit my knee and went in," said the 21-year-old stopper."I didn't really know much about it so just to see it go in was a good feeling.

"I had another two chances which were probably better opportunities but I couldn't trouble their keeper."

Batth revealed Wolves had been warned by boss Stale Solbakken to expect an aerial bombardment against the Cobblers.

"He told us we had to play the conditions and the opposition as well," he said.

"He said we had to win our duels but when we did that, to keep the ball and pass it around and control the tempo.

"I know a few of their lads and they're a well organised side – I think they will do well this season."

Batth, who has been with the first-team squad all summer, admitted competition to remain involved in Solbakken's plans will be tough with new Austrian signing

Georg Margreitter joining Roger Johnson, Richard Stearman and Batth competing for two places, while Steven Mouyokolo will be fit in a month or so.

"The new lads that have come in have made the lads in the team battle to try to keep their places in the side," he said.

It has been suggested that Batth will be loaned out again, but he is yet to find out what the future holds at the moment.

"I'm not sure what's happening yet, no," he said.

"But it was good to be involved in the first team.

"All I can do is do well when I'm on the pitch and train well every day and make sure I do the business."
