New Wolves Molineux megastore opens
MORE than 500 Wolves fans queued around Molineux to get their shirts for the new season signed by manager Stale Solbakken, writes Chris Mallett.
And the soaking drizzle failed to dampen spirits among the crowd, who got their first glimpse of the club's new megastore and spoke optimistically about the forthcoming campaign.
The shirt-signing was inside the new store which was opened with booming rock music and a shower of gold confetti last night.
It is three times the size of the old club shop at 5,000 square feet – where the club's old ticket office used to be – in the new £18m Stan?Cullis Stand.
Keith Boyner, aged 62, was near the front of the queue as son Jack, eight, was one of the youngsters chosen by the club to model the new shirt, which has an old-fashioned collar.
Mr Boyner, of Histons Drive, Codsall, said: "I think the megastore looks brilliant and I'm hopeful for the new season. I think the new manager is a good appointment as he will bring new ideas.
"If they don't sell their best players they have a chance."
Roy Rutter's grandson George, five, was also modelling and was one of the first in line for Solbakken plus players Danny Batth and David Davis to sign his 2012-13 home kit.
Mr Rutter, 61,of Ashmore Park, Wednesfield, called the megastore "bang on, a massive improvement."
He said of the new kit: "It's the best in a few years.
"I like the collar and the more old-school style."
Speaking on a stage outside the megastore prior to the grand opening, Solbakken told of how he had watched more than 40 Wolves games to get clued up on his players before the new season. He said: "My wife wasn't happy. But I saw what was going well and what was not going so well.
"I know expectations are high."
The megastore is part of a £40m redevelopment of Molineux.
Supporters will also be able to access a new museum, bar, restaurant and executive suite from the entrance. The old shop site will become the ticket office.
