Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey today urged fans to put the current rocky spell in perspective – as he hinted that the timing of former boss Mick McCarthy's sacking was wrong.

The Molineux supremo used his programme notes for yesterday's 5-0 defeat against Manchester United to plead with supporters.

Moxey argued that realising that by being in the Premier League for three seasons, the team is performing at a higher level than it has in at any time in the last three decades.

He said: "We are always learning lessons and I think we should all be humble enough to acknowledge when we haven't handled things perfectly.

"But all of those decisions are made with the very best intentions. It was motivated purely by one thing and one thing only – the good of the club. I would like to think the evidence shows that we have got more things right than wrong when you consider the progress of the club in recent years. We shouldn't forget that Wolves went through a period of spending just one season in the top division in 25 years."
