Terry Connor today stressed Wolves must show a measured approach against Blackburn on Saturday and not go gung-ho.

Wolves have conceded 12 goals in their last three games to drop into the relegation zone on goal difference.

Connor faces his first home game in charge knowing a positive performance and result against one of their survival rivals would quell the simmering tension from the Molineux masses frustrated at the messy nature of his appointment.

But with the memory of Mick McCarthy's flawed 4-3-3 plan and subsequent 5-1 debacle against Albion last time out in front of their fans, the new chief has urged his players not go chasing the result from the first whistle and keep a solid base.

"We need to defend well first and foremost to give ourselves a chance," said Connor.

"That's what we've spoken about this week - defending well and giving ourselves a platform to win games.

"There's no point if that back door is always open.

"You need to get the balance right between attacking - even at home - and making sure you're not defensively open to counter-attacks and losing goals.

"We have to try to keep that (solid base).

"It wasn't evident at Fulham but it was there at Newcastle and we need to get back to those standards to stand a chance of winning points and games over 90 minutes."

Connor is confident that the fans will be patient and understand the need not to chase the game from the word 'go'.

"We have to work to win the game over 90 minutes - we're not going to win or lose in the first 15 minutes," he said.

"I think supporters and everyone connected with Wolves will be happy if we win the game.

"It takes 90 minutes to do that – us coming out of the blocks and being 3-0 up but losing 4-3 is no good.

"Yes we want to be positive and play with spirit but we have to make sure we win, and we do that over 90 minutes.

"The Villa game makes the point - you can have an excellent spell in a game but the match lasts 90 minutes.

"It was the same at Newcastle when we were 2-0 down at half time - it wasn't lost and we got the two goals back."
