Former candidate Alan Curbishley today backed Wolves' decision to appoint Terry Connor as manager for the rest of the season.

The former Charlton boss, who twice turned down the chance to take over at Molineux, believes owner Steve Morgan is right to promote caretaker boss Connor to the permanent role.

Connor will lead Wolves' 13-game fight to preserve their Premier League status after both Curbishley and former Rangers boss Walter Smith rejected the chance to take the reins.

Curbishley said: "There were talks between myself and Wolves. They took place last week and what happened in those talks must remain confidential.

"But I am pleased they have given it to Terry Connor for the rest of the season.

"Terry is a man who knows the players. He has been there for more than 10 years and he knows the club inside out.

"I think it's right that, if Wolves haven't got the man they wanted for these 13 games, they have given it to Terry because he knows the players and will probably have an effect straight away."

Curbishley was the leading contender for the job in the early days following Mick McCarthy's sacking but he withdrew from the race after he and Morgan failed to agree on a 'shared vision' for the club.

He then rejected a second approach from Wolves, who also offered Smith the role on both a permanent and a 13-game basis, only for the ex-Scotland boss to say no.
