Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey this afternoon admitted the club's next manager would have to "fit the club's DNA" and refused to rule anyone out as he sought an imminent appointment.

Moxey delivered the news of Mick McCarthy's sacking to the manager this morning after numerous telephone conversations and emails between himself and chairman Steve Morgan and the other board members.

Morgan is currently away on a family skiing holiday in Europe but has been in constant contact with Moxey, while McCarthy was still at the Compton training ground this lunchtime saying his farewells.

Speaking about the next manager, Moxey said he wanted an appointment before the next game at Newcastle a week on Saturday. He told the Express & Star: "We are not ruling out any option at this time.

"It's got to be someone who fits with this football club. That is the pre-requisite of the job.

"I know it's obvious but we are what we are and Wolves needs someone to immerse themselves in the DNA and they need to embrace all that in a way to help us win as many games as we can to stay in the Premier League, then to move on in a positive way.

"However the most important thing is we need a manager who can help us improve our on-field results because our No.1 objective is to win games."

Moxey insisted Wolves are looking for a quick appointment, which opens the way for out-of-work managers such as Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce.

"My entire time is now being devoted towards appointing a new manager," he said. "We have 13 games left which is just over a third of the season left and 39 points to play for."

Moxey admitted it had been a hard decision to sack McCarthy. "There is one reason only why we have taken this decision – because we have 14 points from the last 22 games," he said. "Mick is exemplary manager and a fantastic person. His reputation is intact and he is fully supportive of this club."
