Wayne Hennessey reveals his grief for Gary Speed

Devastated Wayne Hennessey today revealed he is still in shock over the death of Gary Speed.

The Wolves and Wales keeper played both with and under the Welsh national manager, who tragically took his own life on Sunday at the age of 42, and shared his thoughts in a rare interview.

Hennessey was always first choice under Speed as Wales showed signs of improvement with the former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton man at the helm and he is still coming to terms with his death.

"I was so shocked to hear the news, I was absolutely devastated," he said.

"It's taken me a few days to try to come to terms with it. He was a fantastic player and was doing so well as manager. We've lost a footballing legend."

Speed was remembered last night by Leeds fans who chanted his name for 11 minutes in tribute to their former No.11 during the 4-0 win over Forest at the City Ground.

Elsewhere, Liverpool's Craig Bellamy was reduced to tears during a minute's applause in honour of his close friend ahead of the Reds' 2-0 Carling Cup win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Like many, Hennessey was touched by Speed's ability to make his players feel special.

"He was fantastic for me," he said. "He played me in the team and always had a nice word to say about me.

"I couldn't have asked for any more – he was superb."

Hennessey added: "I just feel so sorry for his wife and two lads.

"All of us who played for him are devastated but we cannot begin to imagine what his family are going through.

"Our thoughts are just with them at the moment, and we'll all be going to the funeral to show our support.

"All we can do is wish them the very best and send them our thoughts."

A minute's applause will be held for Speed at all Premier League games this weekend, a gesture welcomed by Hennessey.

"It's good people will be paying tribute," he said. "It's going to be hard to play because we were so close to him."

And Hennessey said the Wales players will aim to fulfil Speed's legacy by qualifying for the next World Cup.

"Hopefully we can continue the work he's been doing, win as many games as we can in his memory and get to the next World Cup," he said.
