Wolves 0 Queens Park Rangers 3
Woeful Wolves looked like they had suffered a power cut just like Wolverhampton city centre.
Woeful Wolves looked like they had suffered a power cut just like Wolverhampton city centre.
Mick McCarthy's men turned in their worst performance of the season to crash to Queens Park Rangers at Molineux.
Goals from Joey Barton and Alejandro Faurlin in the first 10 minutes left Wolves with a mountain to climb at the interval.
Substitute DJ Campbell rubbed salt in the wounds with an 86th minute goal to punish more woeful defending, on a day when Wolves simply weren't at the races.
Apart from a Karl Henry shot that shook the upright after 13 minutes, Wolves failed to seriously threaten goalkeeper Paddy Kenny's goal until time added on at the end, when Kenny pushed away Jamie O'Hara's 30-yard free kick.
Makeshift forward Stephen Ward headed wide from three yards six minutes later, but there was little to suggest Wolves could launch a comeback on a day when everyone bar Christophe Berra looked off the pace.
In fact, it was Neil Warnock's side who looked the more likely scorers throughout and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who caused problems for Wolves throughout, also hit the post in the 79th minute.
McCarthy made two changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Tottenham last week.
As expected, George Elokobi replaced Stephen Ward, who went up front to replace the injured Steven Fletcher.
The other switch saw Matt Jarvis return at the expense of Stephen Hunt, who dropped to the bench.
Wolves produced their worst half of the season as they trailed 2-0 at the break.
McCarthy's side were second to every ball and, when they were in possession, they couldn't keep it as they were hassled out of their stride by a vibrant Rangers team at every opportunity.
They started badly and only a superb save from goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, all of 72 seconds, kept a header from Shaun Derry out of the top corner.
But Rangers soon made their presence felt and bad boy Barton put them in front after eight minutes, reaching the ball before Roger Johnson and prodding home after Shaun Wright-Phillips crashed a volleyed centre across goal.
A minute later, QPR doubled their lead when Faurlin, who continued to pull the strings in midfield, flashed home a volley into the bottom corner from 25 yards, after his own deep cross head been headed partly clear by Elokobi and Richard Stearman.
Wolves' first chance arrived soon after when Karl Henry hit the outside of Paddy Kenny's left-hand post from 25 yards, with Stearman screaming for a penalty after appearing to be pushed by Wolves old-boy Jay Bothroyd, challenging for Jarvis' cross.
Ward should then have scored for Wolves, but could only head over from three yards out from Jamie O'Hara's cross.
QPR returned to the attack and only a last-ditch tackle from Berra prevented Armand Traore wriggling all the way through.
Second to every ball, Wolves had no answer to the free-flowing Rangers.
Adel Taarabt was next to try his luck with an angled effort after being teed up by Barton, who then curled wide as the defence parted for him to try to pick his spot for his second goal.
With Wolves struggling to deal with Wright-Phillips, it required a last-ditch tackle from Stearman to deny the England international after he burst through.
Not surprisingly, the half-time whistle sounded to a deafening chorus of boos around Molineux.
McCarthy responded by making two substitutions, with Sam Vokes and Adlene Guedioura replacing Elokobi and Michael Kightly.
But, although Vokes offered Wolves a different dimension with his size and aerial threat, it wasn't one that the hosts could take immediate advantage of.
In fact, Wolves had more defending to do first as a slip by Berra gave Taarabt the chance of a shot, but his low drive flew straight at Hennessey.
Crosses from Doyle and Henry went begging, with no one able to get anywhere near the ball as Wolves' frustrations grew.
In a final throw of the dice, McCarthy threw on Hunt in the 73rd minute, but there was a mixed reaction from the crowd when they saw it was Jarvis who was to come off.
Wolves again were forced to defend when Wright-Phillips wriggled free of Guedioura's sliding challenge and rattled the base of Hennessey's right-hand post, before the ball bounced back to the grateful goalkeeper.
Campbell made it 3-0 three minutes from time, stabbing home after Traore ran onto a pass from Wright-Phillips and drew Hennessey into the cross, with Wolves' covering players reacting far too slowly.
O'Hara finally forced a save from Kenny in injury-time, when the goalkeeper pushed away his 30-yard free kick.
