Roger Johnson could do a lot worse than ask Wolves legend Ron Flowers for advice on what's it like to captain the club.

Flowers might be a sprightly 77, but he is in the unique position of either having played under, or alongside, Stan Cullis – also the club's greatest manager – Billy Wright, Bill Slater and Mike Bailey.

If you include him as well – the Yorkshireman led the team from 1963 to 1966 – they are five of the finest captains Wolves have ever had.

Flowers was signed by Cullis the manager in 1951 before having a glittering career at Molineux that brought three League championships, the FA Cup and 49 England caps.

During those 16 years, he was captained by Wright then Slater – the last man to lift the FA Cup for Wolves in 1960 – before captaining the team and playing alongside Bailey when he joined the club in 1966.

Flowers said: "To captain this club isn't something that should be taken lightly. Wolves were the number one club in the world and they have always been the number one club for me.

"I'd like to think I was a good servant for them, but they were very good to me as well.

"I don't know Roger, but I know Mick McCarthy, and I know if he's signed him, he will be a good one.

"Mick knows how to treat people – I think he's a similar fellow to Stan Cullis and as long as you do what he tells you, there wouldn't be a problem."
