Mick McCarthy: No issue with Man Utd changes
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy today insisted he is not bothered if Manchester United play a weakened team in their potentially pivotal game against Blackpool.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy today insisted he is not bothered if Manchester United play a weakened team in their potentially pivotal game against Blackpool.
The Tangerines could need the points to stay up at Old Trafford a week on Sunday — when Wolves host Blackburn — while United could be celebrating their Premier League triumph.
United have fielded under-strength teams against West Ham and Hull in games before playing in major finals.
United still beat Hull 1-0 away in 2009 — although the Tigers stayed up — before losing 2-0 to Barcelona in the Champions League three days later.
Two years earlier, United lost 1-0 at home to West Ham as Sheffield United went down, six days before Sir Alex Ferguson's side were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Blackpool were fined £25,000 for making nine changes for their game at Villa earlier this season.
But McCarthy, whose Wolves were fined after infamously making nine changes against United at Old Trafford in December 2009, stressed he was only concerned by his own team's focus.
"I can't do anything about a weakened team — I'm not bothered," said McCarthy, who will have fit-again striker Kevin Doyle available for Saturday's game atSunderland.
"I have no axe to grind with Sir Alex Ferguson.
"They beat Schalke with a weakened team but 10 changes doesn't make them a weakened team."
