Delighted manager Mick McCarthy heaped praise on his Wolves heroes as he praised a terrific effort in beating champions Chelsea.

Jose Bosingwa's fifth minute own goal sealed Wolves' first win over Chelsea since 1983 and their first home top flight one since thrashing them 7-1 in 1975.

McCarthy said: "It was terrific and we're all delighted, relieved and shattered. It's fantastic for everybody connected with the club.

"It tops the Liverpool result but only because it's the latest one. And now we've been terrific against the champions.

"We got away with a couple of things but the defence were brilliant and we didn't make any mistakes.

"You have to work very hard against Chelsea and I asked the two front lads before the game 'give me 60 or 70 minutes of whatever you've got in you, and if I have to drag you off, I'll do it, and if you have to fall off, you can fall off. And they did it.

"We always knew Chelsea would have chances but we restricted them to few and far between."

McCarthy also praised the work ethic of his players after gambling on playing 4-4-2 against Chelsea's 4-3-3.

He said: "To go 4-4-2 I asked a lot of the players because it was against the favoured 4-3-3 everybody plays, but they just bought into it. The players deserve the plaudits for giving everything.

"I can never get any more effort and endeavour out of the players – they never leave a drop on the pitch. I'm hugely thankful and proud of that.

"We sometimes lack a bit of quality and make mistakes – myself included – but as a unit they're fabulous in what they give me.

"I asked certain things of them, but doing it is a different matter and they were terrific.

"We worked on it, talked about it and did it, and for the main part stopped them playing.

"We tried to press them high up the pitch and overall we looked really solid."

McCarthy also praised the support from Wolves fans.

He said: "The fans have been fabulous and have stayed with the team and with me. There has been no bickering or back-biting in the stadium.

"I know there may have been one or two moans, but in the main the supporters have been brilliant and have stuck with me.

"But more important is for them to stick with the team and backing them through this times this season.

"We're probably only going to have 10 really good days in the season - maybe only 10 wins.

"Last night was one of those good nights."

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted he was wrong to say victory was his before the game.

The Italian somewhat arrogantly promised three points when he declared "we will win" at his pre-match press conference.

He said: "I did make a mistake. This week I saw the players and they were in focus, they worked hard, they stayed together and I didn't see problems within the squad.

"We have to focus more on the little details. They decided this match.

"Two times we were one-on-one against the goalkeeper but we weren't able to score."

Ancelotti would be surprised if he lost his job but admitted there were lots of reasons for Chelsea's run of one win in nine.

He said: "I have a good relationship with players and the club. There are a lot of reasons.

"Our season isn't good so far but nothing's lost."
